Making Your Truck More Accessible While Still Being Stylish

Louis Castro

If you have a large truck or van, you know sometimes it can be hard to get in and out of, especially for people with limitations. The idea of sticking a set of steps on the side of the truck might not appeal to you, but there are some ways to tie the steps in so that you are not only making the truck accessible but it will still look great too.

Steps and Rails

A lot of trucks have running boards or side rails on them and for many owners, the look is just what they want. The problem with a sidebar or running board is that they are typically mounted on the frame of the truck. On a truck with a lifted suspension that puts the rail too high to use as a step to get in and out of the truck for most people. The solution is to mount them lower but that presents another issue. They can get caught on things because now they are hanging too low. If you are adding rails or running boards for the look, they are great or if your truck sits lower to the ground they can even be used for ease of access, but on a large truck, they are not the best situation.

Truck Steps

Yes, they are real. Steps designed to be attached to the truck under the door and provide a place to step on when you climb in. They are not a bad idea and in some cases, they work perfectly. If your truck is driven on the street, not off-road, and you like the way they look, truck steps are a good way to make it easy for people to get in. the steps are rigid and are very durable so will last for a long time but you need to remember that they are there so you do not drive over something that the step could get stuck on, damaging the step, the truck, or both.

Retractable Steps

These are the best of both worlds. These truck steps are mounted under the door of the truck but when the door is closed, the steps retract up against the frame and out of harm's way. When you get where you are going, simply open the door and the steps will drop into position. These are more expensive than standard steps and there is some wiring involved but they offer versatility you don't get with the other step types.
